I don’t care what kind of technology these luxury dress brands try to slip into the insoles of their hard bottoms; nothing beats a comfortable pair of sneakers. Nike gave it their best shot in 2013 with a sneaker sole on the Cole Haan x Air Max and one could argue the bottom of a Clarks Wallabee is as squishy and comfortable as any insole, but in my opinion nothing is more comfortable than a great sneaker. Feel free to challenge me in the comments but I’d love to hear what dress shoe you’ve worn lately that compares to the Nike Sock Dart or the Adidas Ultra Boost. There are endless sneakers that I can name that feel amazing on foot, but that doesn’t mean that every shoe is built for business. In my office the dress code is “business casual.” Jeans are allowed and on Friday’s we can come completely casual. Although I realize that many modern companies have standardized a completely casual dress code for work I’m certainly not complaining about where I work because I still get to wear sneakers on a day to day basis. *I do not advise sneakers on Wall Street*
In all situations there should be some balance. You don’t want to be the dad of the office wearing a pair of New Balance 624’s with the untailored khaki’s and a button up. You should also try to avoid being the guy who bikes to work and wears his smelly Nike Pegasus in the office until they have a hole in them. Hopefully this blog helps you out if you’ve been a bit hesitant to get outside of your typical Sperry’s and polo shirt. Every day that you enter the office there are 3 things that you have to have on (or you won’t be working there long): a shirt, pants, and shoes. A general rule that I like to follow is that if two out of three of those items is up to business standards then you should be fine under the business casual code. I’m not the fashion guy but I do know my sneakers so if you’re going to wear your polo and chino’s with a pair of sneakers, let me make a few suggestions: First, always keep your office shoes clean. It doesn’t matter if it’s Jason Markk or Dawn detergent, make sure that your kicks are up to par. Secondly, pay attention to details. All details! Make sure that they are laced correctly and that your colors coordinate. Try to match. Not like a little kid where your mom made your entire outfit match on the first day of school. My personal favorite is when I wear a Ralph Lauren shirt and my shoes match the color of my pony. Details matter. Last but not least, try not draw a lot of attention. If you’re like me and love shoes with abstract colors, make sure that the rest of your outfit has neutral colors so that it doesn’t look like you’re trying so hard to stand out. The last thing you want is for your manager to implement a no sneakers rule on the day you’re wearing your tennis ball Reebok Pumps. If you’re looking to adopt sneakers into your weekly office rotation. I’ve listed a few styles to get you started. I’d love to hear your thoughts on some of the best and worst shoes that you’ve worn to work and let me know how you feel about the list below.
